Its mission is to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy in all its aspects through international cooperation. Its individual members \u2014\u00a0structured in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iau.org\/science\/scientific_bodies\/divisions\/\">Divisions<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iau.org\/science\/scientific_bodies\/commissions\/\">Commissions<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iau.org\/science\/scientific_bodies\/working_groups\/\">Working groups<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 are professional astronomers from all over the world, at the Ph.D. level and beyond, and active in professional research and education in astronomy.
